Terracotta is a ceramic material that has been used for building construction and decorative arts since ancient times in cultures around the world. Terracotta, which literally means “baked earth,” is made from natural clay, which gives it a characteristic reddish-brown colour.
The colour varies slightly depending on the clay used. Terracotta may be glazed for extra durability or to provide colour. It is a waterproof and very sturdy material, and many ancient terracotta sculptures are still in excellent shape.
Terracotta is highly porous must be deep cleaned periodically and either sealed with an impregnated sealer and can also be polished with to a Mid/High gloss Finish.
We have found over the years when cleaning terracotta or clay tiles using a really abrasive pad works best either a black nylon stripping pad or diamond pad attached to a rotary scrubber. This tends to cut back the top surface of the clay in most cases restoring it to a near new condition.
We then rinse the tiles using the Truck Mounted cleaning system with a Turbo Hybrid interior pressure washer tool. This sucks away what we call the slurry which is made up of clay, soil and chemical. Further detailing is performed on the grout lines by hand and nylon brushes, then the tiles are left to dry overnight.
Next day we return to seal and or polish the floor depending on your requirements this process can take anywhere around the 3 hour mark depending on the porousness of the tiles and the size of the floor in question
